Do ChatGPT, Google Maps, LINE, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp work on a Japan eSIM?
Yes. Japan does not block mainstream apps or websites, so ChatGPT, Google Maps, LINE, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Gmail, YouTube and the rest work over a Japan travel eSIM the same way they work on any mobile connection. Freedom House's 2025 report on Japan rates it "Free" and notes that no websites are blocked there. The restrictions travellers do run into come from the apps themselves: sign-up codes sent by SMS, content that depends on which country a service thinks you are in, and security checks on new logins.

App by app
Google Maps. Works normally, including walking and public transport directions with train times and platforms. One catch: downloaded offline maps cover the map and driving directions, but Google's own help page says transit and walking directions are not available offline. On the trains you need a live connection for route planning. See Suica, PASMO and route planning data.
ChatGPT and other chat assistants. Japan is on OpenAI's list of supported countries, and the app and website work over mobile data. Text chats use very little data; voice conversations and sending photos use more. Camera translation of menus and signs works well for visitors.
LINE. The most widely used messaging app in Japan, and many restaurants, hotels and tour operators use it for bookings and questions. If you already have a LINE account, it works over the eSIM. Creating a new account usually needs a phone number that can receive an SMS code, and our eSIM has no phone number. Set it up at home before you fly, or keep your home SIM active for texts so the code can reach it.
WhatsApp. Works for messages and calls over data. Your account stays tied to your home number, not to the eSIM, so nothing changes when you switch the data line. If WhatsApp ever asks you to verify again, the code goes to your home number, which is another reason to keep your home SIM in the phone.
Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube. All available in Japan. They are the heaviest everyday apps because they autoplay video. Our planning estimate for social media is around 150 MB per hour of scrolling, and much more if you watch or post a lot of video.
Email, cloud storage, banking apps. Work normally. Banking apps may ask for extra verification when you log in from abroad, sometimes by SMS to your home number.
Data only: what that means for apps
Our plans are data only. There is no Japanese phone number, so you cannot receive SMS or normal calls on the eSIM. Anything that runs over the internet works: messaging, internet calls, maps, booking sites. What does not work on the eSIM alone is anything that sends you a text message.
The practical fix is to keep your home SIM installed alongside the eSIM, with its data roaming off. Most modern phones handle two lines at once: the eSIM carries the data, and the home line can still receive texts. Check what your home carrier charges for receiving SMS abroad. More on this in data-only eSIMs and phone numbers and avoiding roaming charges.

Country-based content and "not available in your region"
Japan is not blocking anything, but some services decide what to show based on the country they think you are in. Two things to know:
- Your home streaming catalogue may change. Video and music services often license content by country. A show available at home may not appear while you are abroad, and some broadcaster apps only stream inside their own country. That is the service's rule, not a problem with the connection.
- Travel eSIMs do not always appear to be in the country you are in. Across the industry, some travel eSIMs route internet traffic through a gateway in another country, so websites see an IP address from there rather than from Japan. When that happens, an app may show prices, language or content for that country, or occasionally say a feature is unavailable. If an app behaves strangely, check what country it thinks you are in, and if a service you rely on refuses to work, email us with the app name and what you see.
We do not promise that every app will see a Japanese location. What we can say is that we do not add any app blocking or filtering of our own.
How much data the common apps use
Rough planning figures, the same ones our plan finder uses:
- Maps and route planning: around 15 MB per hour of active use
- Social media scrolling: around 150 MB per hour
- Video calls: around 500 MB per hour
- Video streaming in standard definition: around 700 MB per hour
- Video streaming in HD: around 2 GB per hour
Messages, ChatGPT text chats, email and web search are small by comparison. In practice video decides how big a plan you need. Our page on how much data you need in Japan turns these into plan sizes by trip length.
Before you fly: a short checklist
- Update your apps and download anything large over Wi-Fi at home.
- Create or log in to LINE, WhatsApp and any booking or ride apps while you still have your home number active.
- Download an offline map of the areas you are visiting as a backup, knowing it will not give transit directions.
- Turn off automatic photo and video backup over mobile data, or limit it to Wi-Fi.
- Install the eSIM at home and keep it off until you land. See when a plan starts.
Common mistakes
- Removing the home SIM to "save roaming". You lose SMS codes for banking and app logins. Keep it in, just turn its data roaming off.
- Expecting offline maps to plan train routes. They will not; route planning needs data.
- Leaving autoplay and HD video on. Social apps can use a 3GB plan in a few days of heavy scrolling.

Quick answer: ChatGPT, Google Maps, LINE, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp all work on a Japan eSIM; Japan does not block them. Set up any app that needs an SMS code before you go and keep your home SIM in the phone for texts. Some streaming content depends on which country a service thinks you are in.
